Review: Red Bull’s Wax On Wax at Madame Tussauds Hollywood
Twas the day after Halloween which signaled three things. One-People might stop posting pics of dogs and cats in Star Wars costumes now that Halloween is over, two- male chin scruffiness reigns supreme this month and three- 30 Days in LA is finally here! 2015 is flying by at lightning speed and Red Bull kicked off Day One of their annual November takeover with their “Wax on Wax” event at Madame Tussand’s Wax Museum last night. Strolling past a movie premiere wrapping up at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and superhero and Michael Jackson impersonators on Hollywood Blvd, I made my way in to peep the three floors of music activities. Curated by Afropunk, each floor and room had a different vibe.
I started from the top floor working my way down, at the Sub-Pop level where Kyle from King Tuff provided a more serene and chill atmosphere, with patrons spilling out onto the rooftop to eat tacos, receive a free vinyl record or cop some more with Amoeba and Record Store Day pop-up shop tables available for perusing. I next went to the second floor to see DJ Dahi who played a mix of classic and new hip-hop (including Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz’s “Uptown Baby” which this Bronx girl appreciated) and Ali Shaheed Muhammad who mixed 60’s and 70’s soul with Latin music in a room that housed action movie heroes. Last but not least, I ventured to the ground floor to catch DJ Drama who had the crowd turning up in the basement. With stacks of wax, a mix of hype to the max and some nightly relax, the #30DaysinLA’s bar’s been set.
