Capping off a tough year which saw 2.5 billion dollars slashed for women’s health research federally, health advocates and music industry leaders gathered at the ‘Strike A Chord for Women’s Health’ event to connect and discuss ways to help recently at the Gibson Showroom in LA. In partnership, Gibson Gives and Women Who Rock joined forces to spotlight the Magee Women’s Research Institute, the first and largest institute dedicated to women’s health. Beth Heidt, CMO of Gibson Brands, kicked off the night, welcoming the diverse musical group gathered and emphasized the importance of artists in the room to utilize their platform for advocacy, to make a difference when it matters more than ever before.
Throughout the intimate night, the crowd heard disturbing stats from Magee’s CEO Michael Annichine like although the US population is 50.5% women, 13 cents for every dollar NIH spends on research is spent on women’s research and 2% of all philanthropic dollars go to women’s causes. Recent Latin Grammy winner Sheila E who sits on Magee’s board, further encouraged the audience to learn about their life-saving valiant efforts to combat this and to leverage our own powerful voices to mentally, physically, and spiritually support each other during these difficult times. Wrapping up the evening, Grammy Next artist Alex Richie performed a short set, keeping the activist vibe alive and one couldn’t help walking away, empowered and gratified that there are still good people fighting the good fight.
