The memories of visiting Skid Row’s LA Mission one birthday remain emblazoned in my mind. Determined to celebrate spending the day with those in need- no makeup, no comforts we take for granted on a daily basis-made me emotionally thankful to be gifted another 365. Seeing my donations put to good use, talking to some of the homeless trying to survive another night and getting to help with my two hands cemented one of the best birthdays ever. When I’d heard about the Soundstage of Hope event on October 10th benefitting both the LA Mission and Hope The Mission, I’d set my sights on covering this event regardless of location. Further learning it was to be held at the historic Chaplin Studios made me smile. An Angeleno transplant and previous Muppet Show watcher, I fondly remember the Kermit “Little Tramp” statue which presided outside the establishment for the many years The Jim Henson Company spent time there. Also, a music history dork who’s respectfully familiar with the Laurel Canyon ladies Carole King and Joni Mitchell and the “We Are the World” magic created within its walls; I remained resolute I’d find my way there if stars aligned.
Covering the red carpet before the event, a few invitees, performers and honorees stopped by to genuinely express their gratitude for being at this lovely gathering for all the right reasons. Amid the unexpected raindrops, I luckily got to chat with Foo Fighter/Nirvana member Dave Grohl, noted director/producer/Chaplin Studios co-owner McG and ultimate survivor rock musician Puddle of Mudd’s Wes Scantlin. Listen below to:
-hear Dave reveal to me the surprise Annie Lennox supergroup performances in store and how cool it was to perform at Tom Morello’s Power to The People Fest last weekend
-hear Honoree McG describe his pride in being co-owner of Chaplin Studios, his SoCal directing start, WTF moments with Aerosmith and Charlie’s Angels and 2027 movie plans with Kevin Hart
-hear Wes Scantlin explain what he’s survived in his life, what he does when inspired and his 2027 plans
Although I didn’t get to connect with the upcoming birthday boy and night Honoree, John Mayer, performances like the ones below (kudos for the Eddie Van Halen rare replica guitar appearance) encapsulated special moments the crowd enjoyed, you’re likely not to see again. It’s nights like these that refreshingly and raucously remind you LA’s a cool place to be. To learn more about Hope The Mission and LA Mission, visit HERE and HERE!
