When considering influential So Cal hip-hop groups wearing their punk rock and classic rap influences on their sleeves, still standing 30 years later, there’s one group that instantly comes to mind- Kottonmouth Kings (KMK). Known for repping a distinctive Southern Cali intersection, their music dropped in ’96 perfectly encapsulated the 420 loving gangsta rap, rock-listening rebel burb skater kid culture like none other. Wearing through many trials and tribulations, KMK continues on with mainstay D-Loc, Judge D, Chucky Chuck and the Taxman. Recently releasing their lyric video below for “Red Eye Flight”, a new EP ‘California Burning’ drops TODAY on their new label imprint. Wrapping up a tour, with more dates planned, it’s clear the real ones “know about the kingdom” and agree “kings got the best smoke”.
I recently connected with D-Loc and Judge D to chat about early Sublime, Suicidal Tendencies and NWA music memories, being arrested onstage, doing shows with Blondie and Eminem, what we’d be surprised to know about D-Loc and the evolution of the group.
